Whenever viruses spread into the white man’s land, social media begins to take attention. Ebola, Zika, and Influenza have all spread into the United States and that’s when the World Health Organization decided to take action. Why does a white person have to die for government officials to take issues seriously? Low income and impoverished peoples are the ones who suffer the most during outbreaks of viral diseases. The lack of education, access to healthcare, and clean water put people in third world countries at risk of contracting viral diseases. For the few that died in the United States from a virus, thousands have died overseas. Also, there seems to be a trend that the countries who are the most underdeveloped have all been exploited by Western powers. Since this is true, Americans think that a picture of a white doctor helping a black baby on a brochure for Doctors Without Borders will cause all preexisting issues to vanish. Yes, doctors travelling to foreign countries should be well advanced in the science field to help those in need. However, last time I checked, I never learned about undistributed wealth and other cultures’ customs in biology class. Implementing the humanities within the health field is just as important as knowing the difference between a scalpel and 10 blade.
